Ola Lip Balm

Aloha!

When I think of Hawaii, I recall the episode of the Brady Bunch when the family took a trip to Hawaii and investigated an ancient Hawaiian legend. Or was it a curse? Either way, I think they would’ve had an easier time solving this little mystery if they had some Hawaiian-made lip balm.

Okay, I agree. That was lame. On to the review.

PRICE: $6.00 at Hawaiian Body Products

PACKAGING: This standard sized tube just kind of screams “HAWAII!”. The font, the leafy design.. I’ve honestly never had much of a desire to visit Hawaii, but if I ever did, I’d bring this lip balm to give me more of an authentic Hawaiian feel. I wish that the ingredients weren’t written so itty bitty, but what can ya do.

TEXTURE/GLIDE: Not the smoothest glide in the world. Takes a little tugging to get it going. The texture isn’t heavy, but not exactly light either. You definitely know you have something coating your lips. It’s not the most terrible feeling, until the balm gets grainy after a little bit of wear. I really don’t like when that happens.

SMELL/FLAVOR: I have this in Liliko’i Orange and Banana Honey (also available in Coconut Lemongrass, Tropical Melody, and Mango). I chose these two flavors because I felt that they were the most unique, but I’m honestly thinking I should’ve gone with a different selection. Liliko’i Orange is very citrusy. And because I’m sure someone is wondering what the hell a liliko’i is, and to answer that question, it’s passion fruit. The smell of the balm isn’t terrible, but I’m not exactly the world’s largest citrus fan. Some citrus scents are more tolerable than others, but this one just doesn’t really do it for me. Banana Honey smells exactly like banana and honey. No real surprises there. The smell actually reminds me of a few summers ago, when I visited the Long Island Big Duck. I had purchased a stick of homemade banana taffy, and that’s exactly what this lip balm smells like. Banana taffy. Honestly, before that realization, I didn’t like this too much. I thought that the honey was too strong, but now that I’m thinking it smells like banana taffy, I’m loving it and feeling pretty hungry.

LASTING POWER: An hour and a half, maybe two hours at most. Not a bad thing. It leaves your lips feeling soft and smooth once it’s worn off, but not exactly craving more lip balm. I reapply anyway, because that’s what I do, but you wouldn’t have to if you chose not to.

ANYTHING ELSE: You know what baffles me about this lip balm? It’s Hawaiian, right, and when you think of Hawaii, you think sun and sand. And volcanoes. I can’t understand why there is no real SPF protection in this balm. It contains avocado oil, which acts as a natural sunscreen, but I wouldn’t recommend slathering avocado oil all over your body and jumping out into the sun. Just doesn’t really make much sense.

OVERALL: This isn’t nearly the greatest lip balm ever, but it does the job okay enough. I don’t think I can justify spending $6 on it, though. I can buy something comparable for a lot less money than that.
