My Lip Stuff

My Lip Stuff

I recently received a comment from a reader, asking why I don’t have a review for My Lip Stuff. I thought long and hard about this question, and I came to the conclusion that I just didn’t know. I mean, I have tons of them (if you waltz on over to the MLS store, you will discover that there are over 400 flavors to choose from, so duh, it would only make sense that I’d have tons of them), they’re absolutely fantastic (100% natural, and there are even some that are 100% vegan), and they won’t break the bank. So, why in tarnation haven’t I done a review yet?! I just don’t know, but I’m fixing this problem today. I’ll warn you, though.. This one will be a doozy.

PRICE: $2.50 for a regular ol’ tube at My Lip Stuff (the prices vary a wee bit if you want one of the special labelled balms, or if you’re looking at pots instead of tubes)

PACKAGING: I can’t comment on the other packaging for the balms (like the pots), because all I have are the standard ol’ .15oz tubes. The tubes are white with a wrap-around label. Now, very often when I see labels quite like this one, I feel as though I’m going to have a stroke from all the business and confusion, but these are a little more endearing. Lots of words, zero pictures, and apparently colorful (remember, I’m colorblind). It kinda reminds me of that drawing a little kid made for you (or me, or your grandmother). It looks like crap, and it makes no sense, but it’s sweet and it’s fantastic because it doesn’t have to make sense. It’s saying, “I’m freakin’ awesome and for that reason, I don’t need to impress anybody.” Anywho, like I said before I began rambling about little kids and their crappy drawings, these are very cluttered and busy. The brand name is huge, the flavor name is huge, and everything else is cramped and somewhat tiny to a little blind girl such as myself, and normally, this would be an automatic points off type of situation. But here at Balmaholic, I’m loyal to the things I love, and My Lip Stuff is no exception to that rule.

TEXTURE/GLIDE: I go to heaven every time I glide one of these on. I mean, seriously. They are so smooth, and so creamy, and they have absolutely zero resistance. I’d almost say it’s a little oily, but that’s really not the right word for it, because they’re not oily. Not greasy whatsoever. Just total smoothness. The texture is a bit light, but it’s there, and you totally know what I mean by that. Can I also mention that these are insanely moisturizing? Well, I just did, and they really are.

SMELL/FLAVOR: I’ve honestly been dreading this section throughout the rest of the review, because I own, um, 24 of these (and I’m almost certain there’s one or two missing, hmm..) and going through all of those descriptions can be a bit long and tedious (please refer to my post on my beloved Vintage Sister balms). But I love being thorough here at Balmaholic, and I shall force myself to trudge through the boring task of describing all the flavors for you, my faithful readers. Now, as I said, I own 24 of these. Please keep in mind that I want many more of these, and therefore, I will be updating this post as I obtain new flavors.

Apple Irish Cream: This is a St. Patty’s Day limited edition. At first, I hated this. I honestly thought it was kind of gross. But the more I smell it, the more I actually love it. It’s a great combo between the two. It’s just one of those flavors that needed to grow on me.

Apples & Peanut Butter: It is what it is. I don’t really need to explain this. When I first took a whiff of this one, I really wasn’t too sure about how I felt about it, but as I’ve used it more, I’ve really grown to love it. It smells exactly like apples and peanut butter. It’s really amazing.

Baked Alaska: This is described as “Vanilla Ice Cream, Yellow Cake, Pralines, Chocolate, Raspberry, Cream, and a hint of Brandy” on the website. And I’ll be completely honest with you.. I wouldn’t be able to detect all of those scents even if I tried. I mean, they could be there, but I have no idea. Every time I smell it, I catch a hint of something else. Usually, it’s the brandy or the chocolate or the raspberry. It’s a very sweet, heavy smell. I like it, but it’s one of those ones that you really have to be in the mood for (for me at least).

Bananas Foster: On the website, they describe this as “bananas & vanilla ice cream topped with a deliciously sweet brown sugar & rum sauce”. That’s exactly what it smells like, but I’m just not a huge fan. I was looking for a more banana-y smell, and I didn’t get that from this. Not a bad smell, though. Pretty sweet. I’m just not diggin’ it.

Blackberry Buttercream: This flavor is seriously to die for. It’s smells exactly like it should. Sweet and berry-y. It’s one of my favorites.

Buttery Nipple: Okay, admittedly, I got this mostly for the name. It makes me giggle. Sue me. This is another drink balm (surprise, surprise), and it is made up of butterscotch, Irish cream, and rum. And uh, seriously? What’s not to love about that combo? It’s one of my favorites. It reminds me very much of a butter rum LifeSaver.

Caramallow Creme Cake: This is described as “a delicious combination of cream cake, with marshmallow & caramel icing”. And that’s what it smells like. Very sweet and cake-y. There’s almost a vanilla scent to it. That might be the marshmallow. Either way, it’s pretty great.

Coconut Rum: Do you know what coconut smells like? Do you know what rum smells like? If you said yes to both of these, then I don’t need to explain what this smells like. It’s a perfect combo between the two, and it smells great.

Cucumber Cantaloupe: Do I need to describe what this smells like? No? Good. As for my opinion of it, it’s not bad. I definitely smell the cucumber, but I only smell a hint of cantaloupe, which isn’t bad. I’d just like more of a balance between the two.

Honeydew Melon: I am a huge fan of honeydew, and I’ve been on the hunt for an awesome honeydew scented lip balm. Unfortunately, this isn’t easy to come by. I’ll say that this lip balm is sort of awesome. The scent is very faint, and I have to really try to smell the honeydew flavoring, but it’s definitely there. Just not there enough for my tastes.

Hot Toddy: A drink made with rum and honey. It’s kinda strange, because the combination between the two create a rose-like scent. It’s pretty nice. Just not one I like wearing all the time.

French Kiss: This is described as “Bourbon, Apricot, Grendine, & Lemon” on the website. Apparently this is a drink. I wouldn’t really know, ’cause I don’t drink. I like this, at first whiff. But the longer I smell it, the more I kind of feel nauseated. It might be the bourbon, it might be the mixture of fruits, but either way, this isn’t one I wear too often.

Lava Flow: Described as “rum, pineapple, coconut, banana, & strawberry” on the website, this is apparently a drink, and it’s amazing. The rum and fruity combination is awesome and tropical. A little similar to Zombie (seen below). I’m a big fan.

London Fog: In case you don’t know what this is (which I didn’t before buying this balm), it’s described on the site as a blend between Earl Grey tea, milk, and vanilla. I happen to love Earl Grey tea and vanilla. Milk, er, not so much. But the combination of the flavors in this balm make this a favorite for me. It’s absolutely incredible. There’s sweetness, there’s fruitiness, there’s a hint of tanginess.. It’s amazing.

Long Island Iced Tea: I’m from Long Island, and I love alcohol inspired lip balm (and I don’t drink — go figure), so I figured this would be good for me. I smell the rum, and I smell the tea, and that’s good enough for me. It’s sweet, and slightly tangy, and really pretty good.

Midori: I have never had a Midori before, so I’m going to assume that this smells like one (which is apparently a mixture of rum and melons). I definitely smell the rum, but the melons I think are blended too much and it’s hard to distinguish between them, let alone notice that there’s even melon there at all. I’m actually smelling walnuts, but I’m sort of a freak. It’s not a bad flavor, though, so don’t get me wrong. Just different.

Mixed Mystery: To my understanding, this is different for everybody. Correct me if I’m wrong. Mine smells a bit like pina colada.

My Valentine: I got this because it sounded interesting. A mix between roses and chocolate. It’s certainly interesting, and in a way, pleasant. You definitely smell a nice mixture of the two, but to me, it’s not an everyday scent.

Painkiller: Another drink! Described as “Pineapple, Coconut, Orange, Rum, & a dash of Cinnamon”, this one is really, really good. Think pina colada, actually, with a little more tang.

Raspberry Tea: This one is awesome. I can’t say it smells exactly like raspberries and tea, but it definitely has that tea scent to it, and there’s definitely a sweet fruitiness to it. So, let’s just call it accurate, and freakin’ good.

Red Hot Candy Fluff: On the website, it’s described as “hot cinnamon candies & pineapples mixed with tons of marshmallows and whipped cream”. Every single time I smell it, I smell something different. Sometimes I smell pineapple, sometimes I smell cinnamon, sometimes I smell cream.. It’s a surprise every time, and it’s great. I’m a big fan of this one.

Twisted Melon: Described on the site as “an unexpectedly tasty mix of watermelon and peppermint”. It certainly is a unique flavor blend. I honestly can’t distinguish between the watermelon or the peppermint, but there are hints of both as I sniff it. I’m having a little difficulty explaining it, actually. In a way, it reminds me of Elmer’s Paste (but in a good way). This really isn’t one of my favorites, but it’s not my least favorite either.

White Russian: I don’t like this one. A drink, and described as “Kahlua, Vodka, & Cream”, this one really doesn’t do much for me at all. It kinda reminds me of walnuts, and I don’t like walnuts.

Zombie: Another drink balm. This one (made up of Rum, Pineapple, Orange, Lime, & Sugar, according to the site) is insanely good. Very tropical and fruity with a hint of rum. It’s great for summer. And plus, it has an awesome name.

LASTING POWER: The lasting power isn’t super impressive or anything, but when I have a million flavors of one brand, I usually like to switch it up pretty often. So, it being not-so-long lasting makes me even happier with this. I’d say about an hour, maybe an hour and a half.

INGREDIENTS: I honestly can’t find the exact ingredients anywhere on the website, so forgive me.

OVERALL: These are really and truly fabulous. Brea, the owner and creator, has done an absolutely fabulous job and I commend her on her success. I look forward to receiving more of these, because not only are they great balms, but they make for a pretty awesome collection as well.

I’m a huge addict of MLS balms. I loved your scent reviews… I’ve tried a lot of their flavors but not many of the ones you listed, so I’m beginning to crave another order. :D   (Quote)

What is being colorblind like? Is it like you see in black and white, or is it just like you can’t distinguish between colors?  (Quote)

I think you should try the Cat Pee lip balm. That sounds like a you kind of balm. It’s like, grapefruit or something, you should check it out.  (Quote)

  • I purchased a few of these at the suggestion of a co-worker. At first I was really pleased with them – the scents were amazing, and they are SO SMOOTH! – but then I started getting terrible blisters around the outside of my lips. :/ I think I am allergic to something in their non-vegan formula, and after what happened, I’m wary of trying their vegan ones.  (Quote)

  • I have a few of these- Peach Bellini is so good! Fizzy peach! & Rainbow Sherbet which is just like it’s name- it also reminds me of Fruity Pebbles cereal! & Birch Beer Float- it’s like a strong root beer with vanilla ice cream! I love it!!! I also have a booze balm in Sea Breeze- it is very interesting- I can detect the cranberry and grapefruit- but it also smells like almond to me and I don’t think it is supposed to- I still really like it though!  (Quote)

I have a question, for those of you who have tried these, do they leave a nice gloss on your lips?

    Thanks
