I am honestly seriously impressed by this reader review, submitted by Kate. The in-depth detail is impressive, and I’m kinda hoping she’ll continue to keep ‘em coming. That wasn’t a hint or anything. Just sayin’.
Anywho, here’s the review!
PRICE: $12.01 at MyChelle Dermaceuticals which sounds expensive until you realize how much you’re getting for your money.
PACKAGING: Let me start by saying that these things are huge. They look like your standard .15 oz bottom dial twist-tube, but on steroids. They’re .5 oz, making them just under four times the size of a normal tube. At that size, it’s going to take you a while to get through one of these. I just twisted mine down to see how much I’ve used, and in the year since I’ve had it, I’ve gone through maybe half an inch. As far as color/style, these are pretty plain. I have to say I really like the clear-ish purple plastic tube, but the label is kind of boring. There’s one color of label with a second color of font. The company logo is pretty small compared to the size of the balm, and there’s a lot of writing that makes it look a bit cluttered.
TEXTURE/GLIDE: The glide on this one isn’t the best. You really have to press and pull to get it going and it’s not the smoothest feeling when you’re putting it on. Once it’s on your lips, it does become quite smooth, though it’s still pretty thick and the slightest bit sticky.
FLAVOR/SMELL: This is definitely the best quality of this balm. I have it in two flavors, Pistachio Coconut and Cherry Raspberry Pineapple. The Pistachio Coconut has a very creamy/nutty smell too it. I notice pistachio more than coconut, but they’re both there. The Cherry Raspberry Pineapple has a sweet/tangy/fruity smell to it. I notice cherry and pineapple more than raspberry. I’m not usually a pineapple person, but it’s great in this balm. Both flavors have stevia in them, so they’re a little bit sweet.
LASTING POWER: Fantastic. 2 plus hours, which I’m guessing is because of the thickness. I put some on this morning, took my dog out, drank a giant mug of tea, and two hours later, it’s still there doing its thing.
INGREDIENTS: Beeswax, castor oil, natural flavors, coconut oil, grape seed oil infused with organic Melissa, organic passionflower, organic rosehips, organic ginkgo biloba, kokum butter, shea butter, titanium dioxide, D-alpha tocopherol (natural vitamin e), lysine, stevia leaf extract, organic green tea extract, organic aloe vera. The “natural flavors” depend on the balm, so the Cherry Raspberry Pineapple has cherry, raspberry and pineapple, and the Pistachio Coconut has (surprise) pistachio and coconut. I assume this holds true for their other flavors as well.
ANYTHING ELSE: Because of its size, I’ve actually had several people tell me it looked like I was applying a glue stick to my lips when I used this in public, so if you’re shy about that kind of thing, I’d keep this as an at-home balm. As far as moisturization goes, I’m not going to stand up and thank the heavens for it, but my lips definitely do feel pretty soft. And again, it’s thick, so I think it would make a good lip protectant in the winter.
OVERALL: I’d have to say this isn’t the most fantastic balm I’ve ever used, but it smells great and does a pretty good job. So I’ll go ahead and give it 3.75. Points off for the label, the glide, and the slight stickiness. -Because I don’t have a .75 lippie, I rounded down and gave it 3.5, but just be aware that’s not it’s true rating.
